October 29, 2002 - The Federal Government Gives $2.1 Million
The federal government is giving Maine $2.1 million to identify lead paint hazards and eliminate the danger of exposure, especially by children. The grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development will help state and local governments set up programs to eliminate lead from buildings. Many of Maine's houses were built before 1960, when lead paint was widely used. Studies have shown that one out of every nine youths in Maine has excessive lead levels in their blood. Lead exposure has been linked to delayed development and learning disabilities, lower IQs and attention deficit disorder. The grant was announced by Maine Democratic Congressmen Tom Allen and John Baldacci.
